A congenital form of anemia occurring mostly in blacks; characterized by abnormal blood cells having a crescent shape. Synonyms: crescent-cell anaemia, crescent-cell anemia, drepanocytic anaemia, drepanocytic anemia, sickle-cell anaemia, sickle-cell disease.
